GRANT
GRANT (‘Gastroenterology Research and Audit through Northern Trainees’) is a trainee-led collaboration delivering regional gastroenterology and hepatology research and audit projects across the North East. The ethos of GRANT is for trainees to reap maximum reward for the hard work they put into local projects every year. We achieve this by rolling out local projects via our regional network, turning them into bigger, more impactful pieces of work. This makes them much more likely to be accepted for posters, oral presentations and publications!
All gastroenterology SpRs in the region automatically become GRANT members, and we welcome associate members from all other training grades and allied professions. The committee is lucky to have a number of senior trainees with formal research experience who can support project design and delivery, but we encourage members and associate members to suggest and lead their own projects. This works particularly well if trainees have already delivered their project locally, as this can be used as a pilot and, if necessary, adjustments and troubleshooting can be performed prior to rolling it out more widely. We can also support trainees with writing and submitting abstracts, creating posters and delivering presentations.
We encourage education and networking within the region. We support current SpRs who are interested in research and more junior trainees who are planning to apply for gastroenterology. We do this by signposting trainees to projects and other opportunities, and have a quarterly newsletter and annual symposium to help facilitate this. We also work with consultants who have projects they would like to deliver, or courses, fellowships and other opportunities that they wish to highlight to trainees.
